What Happens When Your Propane Tank Runs Empty

Running out of propane is something that you want to avoid as much as possible. Some of the downfalls of letting your tank run empty include the following:

  • Appliances may require manual relighting or professional service
  • Air can enter the gas lines, causing pressure issues
  • Moisture can enter the tank, which can cause rust
  • Seals can weaken in the gas line, increasing the risk of leaks
  • A leak test is required before refilling an empty tank

Signs Your Propane Tank Is Empty

If you suspect your propane tank is empty, there are some ways to tell for sure. One indicator of an empty propane tank is if you try turning on an appliance, and there’s no flame, no heat, weak flow, or if the flame quickly dies out. Make sure the valve is fully open before assuming it’s empty. If these things occur, then go outside to your propane tank, and knock or tap on the side of the tank. If it sounds hollow all the way down, it’s empty. If you hear a dull thud in part of it, there's still propane inside, but you should call us to verify this as soon as possible.
